After removing the lyrics feature from its free (ad-supported) tier last year, Spotify has announced the feature’s return, now with a monthly usage limit.
Lyrics were initially introduced on Spotify in early 2020 and quickly became a popular feature across all platforms. However, by late last year, users noticed that accessing lyrics required a Premium subscription.
Recently, some users observed the return of lyrics for free users. Spotify confirmed this development to TechCrunch, stating:
“At Spotify, we’re always testing and iterating. This means the availability of our features can vary across tiers and between markets and devices. Over the coming weeks, we’ll be expanding lyrics availability for Spotify Free users so more people can enjoy viewing more lyrics, globally.”
Although Spotify did not explain why lyrics were removed for free users initially, the company did reveal (outside of its official statement) that the limit on how many lyrics free users can view monthly has been significantly increased from the previous cap of three songs per month.
In an update to 9to5Google, Spotify clarified that the new limit is so high that no user is likely to ever reach it, and in fact, no single user has come close. The specific number remains undisclosed.
This change is set to roll out to all users “over the coming weeks,” but many free users have already noticed the feature returning in their apps.
