SpaceX Launches Five Giant BlueBird Satellites for AST SpaceMobile

On September 12, 2024, SpaceX successfully launched five BlueBird satellites for AST SpaceMobile into orbit. The launch took place at 08:52 GMT (04:52 ET / 01:52 PT) using a Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida.

The rocket’s first stage successfully landed on Landing Zone 1 about 7.5 minutes after liftoff. The second stage deployed the BlueBird satellites into low Earth orbit and unfolded them over a 14-minute period following launch.

Each BlueBird satellite is equipped with a communications antenna covering 64 square meters — the largest commercial communications array ever deployed. The BlueBird satellites are part of a commercial constellation designed to provide mobile connectivity directly to smartphones.

“This is a pivotal moment for AST SpaceMobile as we bring our vision to enhance cellular connectivity globally, with the support of our strategic partners and the unwavering commitment of our team,” said Abel Avellan, CEO of the company.

AST SpaceMobile plans to deploy 168 satellites in the future, with some expected to be significantly larger.

SpaceX and AST SpaceMobile are competitors in the satellite internet space. SpaceX has already launched 7,001 Starlink satellites, over 100 of which are capable of providing direct connectivity services to smartphones.
