OpenAI and Anthropic Secure Deals with US Government for AI Oversight

OpenAI and Anthropic, leading AI startups, have recently inked agreements with the United States government aimed at the research, testing, and evaluation of their artificial intelligence technologies. These groundbreaking deals, announced by the U.S. Artificial Intelligence Safety Institute, come amid increasing regulatory focus on the ethical and safe use of AI.

The agreements mark a significant step as the companies face mounting scrutiny over the development and deployment of their AI models. California is poised to vote on legislation this week to regulate AI development and use comprehensively within the state.

Jack Clark, Co-Founder and Head of Policy at Anthropic, emphasized the importance of these collaborations:

“Ensuring safe and trustworthy AI is essential for its beneficial impact. Partnering with the U.S. AI Safety Institute allows us to rigorously test our models before their broad deployment.”

Anthropic, supported by Amazon and Alphabet, will provide the institute with access to their latest models both before and after public release.

Jason Kwon, Chief Strategy Officer at OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, also expressed optimism about the agreements:

“We see the institute as vital in establishing U.S. leadership in the responsible advancement of artificial intelligence. We hope our partnership offers a model that can be replicated globally.”

Elizabeth Kelly, Director of the U.S. AI Safety Institute, highlighted the significance of the deals:

“These agreements are just the beginning but represent a crucial milestone in guiding the future of AI responsibly.”

The institute, part of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), will also collaborate with the U.K. AI Safety Institute and provide feedback on potential safety improvements.

The U.S. AI Safety Institute was established last year through an executive order by President Joe Biden’s administration to assess both current and emerging risks associated with artificial intelligence models.
