Intel has secured its first major client for its new AI accelerators. The company announced a significant partnership with IBM, marking the first instance of Gaudi 3 accelerators being adopted in the market.
IBM and Intel have announced a global collaboration in which Gaudi 3 will be deployed as a service in IBM Cloud. The service is expected to be available in early 2025, aiming to scale enterprise AI solutions more efficiently while driving innovation with high levels of security and reliability. Additionally, Gaudi 3 will be supported on IBM’s AI and data platform, watsonx. IBM Cloud will be the first cloud provider to adopt Gaudi 3, offering the service for both hybrid and on-premises environments.
Although the volume of Gaudi 3 purchases by IBM has not been disclosed, it is believed that the order is substantial. Currently, Gaudi accelerators are sold in much smaller volumes compared to Nvidia products and significantly lag behind AMD Instinct. However, Gaudi 3 is notably cheaper than its competitors.
Gaudi 3 is manufactured using a 5nm process and is equipped with 128GB of HBM2e memory. The flagship HL-325L version, according to Intel, delivers FP8 performance of up to 1835 TFLOPS, nearly reaching 2 PFLOPS.
