Google TV Streamer Replaces Chromecast: What You Need to Know

After more than a decade and over 100 million units sold, Google has announced the end of the Chromecast era. The company has confirmed it will cease the production of all Chromecast variants, including the $40 4K model (introduced in 2020) and the $30 HD model (released in 2022). As a result, new Chromecast units will soon become scarce.

However, Google isn’t exiting the streaming device market entirely. The company is introducing the Google TV Streamer as the successor to the Chromecast. This new device is marketed as an “AI-powered, next-generation streaming and smart home” hub.

The original Chromecast, launched in 2013, filled a significant void by adding streaming capabilities to non-smart TVs and extending the functionality of older models. It also made it easier for users to stream content from their smartphones to larger screens. The success of Chromecast led to the development of Android TV, now present on over 220 million devices worldwide.

Everything to Know About the Google TV Streamer

The Google TV Streamer, priced at $100, offers a range of new features compared to its predecessor. Beyond its streaming capabilities, it functions as a smart home hub and integrates seamlessly into a Google Home setup. The new device supports Matter, enhancing its compatibility with various smart home products. Unlike the Chromecast, which connects via HDMI, the Google TV Streamer is designed to operate as a standalone unit positioned next to your TV.

The Streamer benefits from Google’s latest AI advancements, including Gemini, which can provide summaries and season breakdowns of your favorite shows. Integration with Google Home also allows users to display Google Photos memories, monitor Nest camera feeds, and control smart home devices such as lights, air conditioners, and blinds directly from the Streamer.

Available in Porcelain and Hazel, the Google TV Streamer comes with an ergonomic remote featuring a custom button for quick access to your preferred streaming app. Preorders start on August 6, 2024, with the device officially launching on September 24, 2024, at a price of $99.99.
