Google Tensor G4 Loses Over 50% Performance in Throttling Test

Google’s Tensor G4 processor, featured in the new Pixel 9 Pro XL, has faced criticism following a throttling test. According to data shared by @callmeshazzam, the chip shows a significant drop in performance under sustained load, raising concerns about its ability to handle intensive tasks.

The test, designed to measure the chip’s computational power during prolonged stress, revealed a sharp decline in performance after just three minutes. Initially, the chip reached a performance level of 341 GIPS, but due to throttling, it dropped to 145.5 GIPS, which is only 42.6% of its peak output. This drastic reduction is attributed to thermal regulation issues, with the core frequencies dropping to 1.32 GHz and efficiency cores down to 570 MHz.

Despite the significant performance drop, the chip does show some recovery, stabilizing at about 65% of its maximum potential after the initial phase of severe throttling, according to reports.

While Google has yet to release detailed specifications for the Tensor G4, Geekbench results suggest the chip can reach a peak single-core frequency of up to 3.1 GHz and multi-core frequencies of up to 3.6 GHz.
