ChatGPT Weekly User Base Surpasses 200 Million, Doubling in a Year

OpenAI has announced that the number of weekly active users of its AI chatbot, ChatGPT, has exceeded 200 million, doubling from the same period last year. This milestone is particularly noteworthy given the increasing competition in the AI chatbot market.

ChatGPT remains the leader among generative AI chatbots, but the environment is becoming more competitive as other major tech companies regularly release updates to their AI solutions in hopes of capturing market share.

OpenAI also revealed that 92% of Fortune 500 companies are now using its products, and the usage of its automated API has doubled since July when the updated GPT-4o language model was introduced.

“Our tools are now integral to people’s daily lives, driving real changes in areas like healthcare and education. They help with routine tasks, solve complex problems, and unlock creative potential,” OpenAI CEO Sam Altman told Axios.

The language model market remains fiercely competitive, with companies like Microsoft, Google, OpenAI, and Meta all vying for dominance. Meta recently reported significant growth in downloads of its open-source Llama language models.
