ASUS and MSI Release BIOS Updates to Intel 14th and 13th Gen CPU

ASUS has become the first company to release UEFI firmware updates for its motherboards, incorporating Intel’s latest 126 microcode update. This update addresses stability issues affecting Intel Core 14th and 13th Gen processors based on the “Raptor Lake” and “Raptor Lake Refresh” architectures. These issues stemmed from an incorrect implementation of on-die power management, which led to excessive voltage levels, causing physical degradation of the processors over time.

If you are already experiencing stability issues with your processor, it is advisable to claim an RMA or seek warranty service, as this indicates that the CPU has likely suffered degradation. However, if your processor is new and currently stable under various workloads, including gaming and compute-heavy tasks, it is crucial to apply this UEFI firmware update to prevent potential damage, as it corrects the power management issue.

Professional overclocker Safedisk, associated with ASUS, has shared a list of ROG and ProArt motherboard models based on the Intel Z790 chipset that already have the relevant firmware updates available. It is expected that ASUS will soon release similar updates for other product lines, such as TUF Gaming and Prime. If your motherboard model is not yet listed, it is recommended to regularly check the Support section of your motherboard’s product page on the ASUS website.

Meanwhile, MSI is also preparing to release BIOS updates for Intel 700 and 600 series motherboards, as well as desktop PCs equipped with 14th and 13th Gen processors. These updates, which include the 0x129 microcode, aim to mitigate the instability issues. The first batch of updates will be available for models including MEG Z790 GODLIKE MAX, MEG Z790 ACE MAX, MPG Z790 CARBON MAX WIFI II, MPG Z790 CARBON WIFI, MAG Z790 TOMAHAWK MAX WIFI, and Z790MPOWER. MSI plans to release BIOS updates for all affected models by the end of August and advises users to stay informed through the company’s official channels and product pages.
