Motherboards featuring AMD’s B850 and B840 chipsets will not be available until early 2025, unlike the higher-end X870 and X870E models, which are expected to launch this fall, according to ComputerBase.
AMD had previously hinted at a staggered release for its 800-series chipsets compatible with the latest Ryzen 9000 processors. Reports from Tom’s Hardware confirm that the release of the B-series motherboards has been pushed to early next year. In contrast, motherboards with X870 and X870E chipsets are slated for release next month. This delay might disappoint users who were planning to upgrade to the AM5 platform while keeping costs lower with the B-series motherboards.
On a positive note, existing AMD 600-series motherboards fully support the new Ryzen 9000 processors, though a BIOS update is required for compatibility.
The AMD 800-series chipsets mark the first expansion of the B-series lineup, introducing more advanced options like the B850 and B840. The B840 will serve as an entry-level option without CPU overclocking support and with only PCIe 3.0 compatibility, making it a successor to the previous A620 chipset. The B850, on the other hand, supports CPU overclocking and offers PCIe 5.0 support for SSDs and PCIe 4.0 for other expansion slots.
The absence of new B-series motherboards at the ongoing Gamescom event suggests that their official announcement might take place at CES 2025, scheduled for early January next year.
